Brand	AmmoDyn
Condition	New
Caliber	12 Gauge
Shell Length	2 3/4
Shotgun Shot Weight	1-1/8 oz
Shot Size	Slug

For extended-range defensive shotgun applications, bear defense, and any scenario where a single deeply penetrating projectile is preferable to a shot column, the rifled slug remains the direct answer a shotgun can give. This ZSR-manufactured load launches a 494-grain lead slug — .72 caliber, more than three times the mass of a .308 Winchester projectile — at 1,444 fps, producing approximately 2,290 ft-lbs at the muzzle. That is more energy than a full-power .30-06 delivers, from the smoothbore 12 gauge you may already carry. High-brass hull construction, choke-tube-safe soft lead with compression ribs, and non-corrosive priming throughout. A serious tool for serious short-range applications.

Key Features:

The AmmoDyn 12 Gauge 1-1/8oz 2.75" Rifled Slug High-Brass Ammunition — here's a breakdown of its key features:

Slug Weight	494 grains (1 1/8 oz) Heavy for its class, delivering deep penetration and hard impact on large-bodied game
Muzzle Velocity	1,444 fps Full-power slug velocity, flat enough to be practical inside 100 yards
Muzzle Energy	Approx. 2,290 ft-lbs Comparable to a full-power .30-06, concentrated in a single .72 caliber projectile
Barrel Compatibility	Smoothbore Designed for standard shotgun barrels — no dedicated rifled slug barrel required
Hull Construction	High Brass Head Taller metal head supports the heavier charge and improves extraction reliability
Rounds Per Box	10 Standard slug box count, available in case quantity

Applications & Use Cases:

Shotgun-Only Deer Zones: The professional answer where rifle hunting is restricted by regulation. Ballistically appropriate for the application it exists to serve.
Hog & Boar Hunting: Deep penetration through the mature boar's cartilaginous shield, where buckshot may fail.
Bear Country Defense: Substantial mass in a single projectile. A frequent selection for camp and trail-gun applications.
Slug Zero Documentation: Slugs print materially differently from shot patterns. Volume pricing enables realistic sight-in work.
Extended-Range Defensive Depth: Effective past the distance where buckshot patterns open beyond usable density.

Pros and Cons:

Pros

✔ Substantial Energy Delivery: ~2,290 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Comparable to a full-power .30 caliber rifle cartridge.
✔ Smoothbore Compatibility: No specialized barrel required. Compatible with standard 12 gauge shotguns.
✔ Choke-Tube Safe: Soft lead with compression ribs. Compatible with cylinder, improved cylinder, and modified chokes.
✔ Deep Penetration: 494-grain projectile penetrates heavy bone and muscle reliably.
✔ Realistic Training Cost: Priced substantially below sabot slug alternatives, supporting genuine zero verification.

Cons

✘ Trajectory Drops Steeply: Low ballistic coefficient. Substantial holdover required beyond 75–100 yards.
✘ Significant Recoil: Among the highest-recoil loads available in 12 gauge. Session length should be adjusted accordingly.
✘ Barrel-Dependent Accuracy: Accuracy varies materially by barrel. Individual verification is essential.
✘ Not Suited to Rifled Barrels: Rifled slug barrels are engineered around sabot ammunition. This load performs better from smoothbore.

About AmmoDyn & ZSR:

AmmoDyn, Corp. is a licensed federal firearms licensee and ammunition wholesaler headquartered in Signal Hill, California, specializing in NATO-standard munitions for military, law enforcement, and commercial markets. AmmoDyn product is manufactured by ZSR Patlayıcı Sanayi A.Ş. of Balıkesir, Turkey. ZSR's core business is defense-sector metallic ammunition — 9x19mm through 12.7x99mm, including M193, M855, M80 Ball, tracer, and armor-piercing loadings built to NATO reference documents — and that same manufacturing discipline carries over into their sporting shotshell lines, which have reached the U.S. market under several labels over the years. For a buyer, the appeal is straightforward: a defense contractor's quality control at import pricing rather than domestic premium pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need a rifled barrel to shoot rifled slugs?

A: No. The term "rifled slug" refers to the angled ribs swaged into the outside of the projectile — those ribs exist primarily to permit safe compression through a choke, not to impart rotation. A rifled slug stabilizes aerodynamically: mass concentrated forward, drag maintains nose-first orientation. This is a smoothbore load. If you own a fully rifled slug barrel, sabot ammunition will typically produce superior accuracy.

Q: Is choke-tube use safe with this load?

A: Yes, through cylinder, improved cylinder, and modified constrictions. The soft lead construction and compression ribs are engineered for safe compression through those choke tubes. Do not fire slugs through full or extra-full constrictions, or through aftermarket turkey/waterfowl chokes unless explicitly approved by the manufacturer. Improved cylinder is generally considered optimal for both safety and accuracy.

Q: What is the realistic effective range?

A: For hunting applications, most practitioners treat 75 yards as the practical limit with iron sights and 100 yards as the effective ceiling with an optic and a barrel that shoots slugs consistently. At 1,444 fps with a very low ballistic coefficient, the projectile sheds velocity rapidly. A common zero approach is 50 yards, which provides close-to-point-of-aim performance out to approximately 75 yards.

Q: How does 494 grains compare to common rifle projectiles?

A: A common .308 Winchester bullet weighs 150 grains; .45-70 loads typically run 400 grains. This slug at 494 grains exceeds both, and at .72 caliber it is substantially larger in diameter. Velocity is meaningfully lower than rifle projectiles, but the mass differential more than compensates at short range.

Q: Will slug point of impact match my buckshot?

A: Almost certainly not, and the offset is frequently substantial — several inches is common. Sight in specifically with the slug load you intend to carry, at the distances you intend to shoot. This is the primary rationale for purchasing slugs in quantity: the ability to properly document your zero for the specific load and specific shotgun in question.
